Being married in college is something that I am asked a lot of questions about. People seem to raise their eyebrows at the idea of being married at the tender age of 21.
I actually met my husband Austin when I was only 14 years old! We met when I was in middle school, and dated throughout high school and part of college until I was 20 and he was 21, when we were finally married.
A lot of people are so surprised when I tell them I’m already married, especially when I say that I am a senior in college. People are really caught off-guard that we made this commitment at such a young age, and that neither of us ever dated anyone else before tying the knot.
We went on our first real date when I was a sophomore in high school. I remember going to the movies for the first time with a boy… little did I know this would be the only boy that I would enjoy every (underrated) Rachel Mcadams movie with.
After we had dated for several years friends and family tried to encourage us to see other people, I got “you can’t just date one person for the rest of your life!” more than once.
But I did. Because the truth is, that when you fall in love with someone, even at 14 or 15, you can’t change the fact that this is the person that you are always going to want. No one else will ever compare.
When you know, you just know.
I think about the serendipity of what happened to us all the time, I think us finding each other at such a young age is so rare, and such a miraculous blessing. God saved us both from so much heartache and placed us together from the very beginning.
We were met with even more surprise and anxiety from people when we announced our engagement in 2014 (when I was 18) and shock when we decided to marry in 2016 before either of us has finished college.
For both of us, our wedding day felt like a day that we had been waiting for our entire lives (6 years to be exact!) and nothing felt more right.
We were married in Paintsville, Kentucky on May 21st 2016, in a ceremony that felt very much like the fairytale I had always dreamed of: pink peonies, handwritten vows, a spiral staircase, and ultimately surrounded by family and friends that were loving and supportive. It was the most amazing (and fast) day of our lives!
We left in a cloud of sparklers and headed to the airport where we flew out a few hours later to Charleston, SC where we left for a cruise to the Bahamas a couple of days later.
To date we have been together for over 7 years, nearly 1 1/2 of those we have been married! We currently reside in Morehead, KY with our two dogs in our cozy little apartment.
Although sometimes it’s hard to maintain the balance between being a wife, a student, and a dog mom (all jokes aside, they are a handful!) finally promising the rest of my life to my greatest confidant and fan has been the greatest decision I have ever made.
Although my life may look a little strange to some people, it works. The cliche of “doing life” together really applies to us, we are just living our lives the way we want to, enjoying it together, regardless of how dysfunctional it may appear to someone else!
